TYPES OF NECKLACES
We love wearing necklaces and we can’t get enough of them to add to our jewelry collection. There are many designs in women’s necklaces and this guide will explain the different styles available to make your necklace shopping experience easier!
WHAT IS A NECKLACE
A necklace is any type of ornamental item worn around your neck. A necklace can be made from anything. The most common types are a chain (linked metal rings) with a pendant hanging off it or string of beads. The variations are endless.
WHERE DID NECKLACES COME FROM
People have been wearing some form of jewelry since the dawn of civilization. The earliest necklace was made from fish bones was discovered approximately 25,000 years ago in a cave in Monaco. What did this necklace actually signify? Was it worn for decorative purposes or for religious or spiritual purposes? It is safe to say that necklaces have been around since we first started to clothe ourselves, first to protect and cover our naked bodies, as well as to adorn and beautify ourselves.
HISTORY OF NECKLACES
In early societies, jewelry was worn as amulets to protect against bad luck and illness or as talismans to give the wearer vitality and good luck. Wearing necklaces became popular with the ever so stylish ancient Egyptians and we have been wearing them for a variety of reasons ever since.
Although most people wear necklaces to adorn themselves, a necklace around your neck can mean more than decorating oneself. Necklaces have been associated with high status, authority, memberships in secret society or clubs and sororities, and also an achievement of some sort.
In Ancient Rome, signet pendants were made to sport an insignia to represent a person’s identity, to be transferred in an impression in a wax seal, and was then used to seal letters or sign important documents. In the Victorian era, lockets were outfitted with a small compartment in which to conceal things. In mythology, necklaces are often endowed with spiritual or supernatural significance.
High-end diamond necklaces can also signify wealth and status especially if you’re lucky enough to be able to afford uber high-end jewelry brands such as Cartier, Tiffany, Chanel fine jewelry, Van Cleef and Arpels and Bulgari just to name a few.
Wearing necklaces also has important symbolic functions and has been intertwined with human emotions and desires especially in relation to relationships such as friendships, engagement, and marriage.
In the early stages of an intimate relationship, a couple might exchange personalized pendant necklaces to show each other they care.
NAME OF NECKLACES
There are many different types/ styles of necklaces, which means that there are many names, titles, and definitions that a particular style of a necklace is called. The following are just some names of necklaces styles that are available out there:
1) PERSONALISED NECKLACES
Personalized necklaces are when the necklace is aimed specifically at the person that will be wearing it. They make fantastic jewelry gifts for that someone special. Zodiac, Initial, Name, Birthstone, and engravable ID tag custom necklaces give your jewelry gift more meaning as it shows that you thought about the person you are buying for because it represents a bit of who they are.
2) PENDANT NECKLACES
The word pendant comes from the French word pendre, which means “to hang.”
When an ornament is strung through to hang freely from a chain or leather necklace it becomes a pendant. Pendants types include everything from religious symbols, amulets to protect the wearer from harm, or a talisman which endows the wearer good luck. Any type of design that appeals to the eye and following fashion trends are often incorporated into pendants. Pendants can be made from any material including metals, glass, and gemstones. They can be any size from delicate and tiny to large statement pendants.
3) CHOKER NECKLACES
The choker necklace is short in length usually sits higher up towards the neck. It can be fine and delicate in design or big and bold in its design. It can also be a ribbon or a strap of leather with a pendant hanging off.
The choker neckring is a necklace that uses wire or tubing instead of a chain to hang pendants from. To change your look you can slide the pendants off and wear it on its own.
4) CHAIN NECKLACES
The invention of the chain necklace (metal rings linked together) made it possible for pendants, charms, amulets, and anything else you can think of, to be worn easily. Wearing a simple chain necklace on its own also gives an understated style to your outfit.
5) STATEMENT NECKLACES
The Statement Necklace is exaggerated and large, usually colorful and very eye-catching. Usually but not exclusively made from non-precious metals and materials. These are great to wear to parties and special events. They can be chokers, collars, or any length as long as it is fancy and decorative.
6) COLLAR NECKLACES
The Collar necklace is usually thick and can be made from leather. Wearing it would give you an edgy feel to your look. Different from the statement necklace, it sits more around the neck, think along the lines more dog collar.
7) LOCKET PENDANT NECKLACE
The Locket pendant is a necklace with a picture. It's a great piece of personalized jewelry. The locket is a pendant that can be opened via a hinged mechanism to reveal a photo and usually hangs off a chain You can insert a photograph of your loved one and have it close to your heart as a keepsake.
8) FASHION JEWELRY NECKLACES
Fashion necklaces are usually made of non-precious metals and worn purely for no other reason than adornment and fashion. These necklaces add style to your outfit and follow fashion trends, they include all styles of necklaces and many designs. They are made from cheaper metal, such as brass, copper, or metal alloy which is then plated with a thin layer of precious metal to make the piece more durable and presentable.
Necklaces are here to stay, we have mentioned a number of modern styles but there are many more types of necklaces available, which I will follow up in a future blog. What people are wearing at the current time depends on the fashion and jewelry trends of the era. Today with COVID 19 here to stay we have seen a rise (though not exclusively), in minimalist jewelry. We seem to be attracted to wearing small pendants on chains for everyday wear, these can be layered with additional necklaces to give your outfit a more sophisticated look. Keep it simple!
